Disc Problems

Disc Problems?
The disc is a small cartilage pad that is situated between spinal bones. The soft jelly like center is contained by layers of fibrous tissues. Each disc serves as a connector, spacer, and shock absorber for the spine. When healthy, discs allow normal turning and bending. Since spinal discs have a very poor blood supply, they depend upon the circulation of joint fluids to bring in nutrients and expel waste. If a spinal joint loses its normal motion and this pumping action is impaired, the health of the disc deteriorates. Like a wet sponge, a healthy disc is flexible. A dry sponge is hard, stiff, and can crack easily. This is how many disc problems begin. Because of the way each disc is attached to the vertebra above and below it, a disc cannot "slip" as commonly thought. However, trauma or injury to the spine can cause discs to tear, bulge, herniate, prolapse, or dessicate. This can be quite painful, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, often interfering with their function.
The chiropractic approach to disc problems is to help restore better motion and position to the spinal joint. Besides reducing disc bulging, better spinal function helps reduce inflammation and begin the slow process of healing the surrounding soft tissues. While results cannot be guaranteed, many patients have avoided needless surgery or a dependency on pain pills, by choosing conservative chiropractic care.

Hello my name is Laura Critten and I first became a patient in June of ’07. In 2005 I became aware of severe pain in my back. Because of this pain I couldn’t stand or walk. I suffered from headaches, I couldn’t sleep and I had no energy. I tried different kinds of treatments such as medications and surgery but the only results from these treatments were severe pain and loss of movement. Within two weeks of starting chiropractic care I had more mobility and less pain. I was able to stand in lines and walk a short distance. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Dr. Maurer is good at explaining treatments and how they work.
Hey, my name is Leorah. I began having pain in my neck when I was just 19 years old. It was hard for me to move my neck, it hurt in every position. I had previous treatments and tried using a pain reliever cream, neither helped the pain much. I didn’t miss any work but I had to work with the pain. After getting treatment for one week at Family Back and Neck Care Centre I noticed an improvement. I am now fully relieved from pain. It doesn’t hurt to do daily activities anymore. I can move my neck and have no pain. I feel better and I’m happier because I’m not in constant pain. My neck and back are a lot better. The doctors here are both great and very friendly!!
